A VPN is important when going on public WiFi whether you're traveling or at home. I use StrongVPN and have written about the why and how of it

Hotel WiFi, coffee shop WiFi... are public and without a VPN you can have your identity stolen and your accounts hacked. StrongVPN also allows me to watch Netflix when I'm out of the country and get around WiFi firewalls in countries that have them.
