Itching to Hit the Road
Published: Mon, 04/23/18
Winter has finally released its grip on Toronto (at least, I think it has). The snow has melted, the sun is shining, and for the first time this year, I was able to sit outside and enjoy a coffee against a backdrop of birdsong and spring flowers pushing their way out of the earth.
All of this means that road trip season will soon be upon us, and I am yearning to get behind the wheel and go! For most of my life, I was a passenger. Then, at the age of 48, I took a seat in a classroom full of teenagers at a driving school and began a new phase of life as a driver. Inspired by the many road trip stories contributed by readers or written by Janice on our website, I hit the road before my official driver's licence had even arrived in the mail! Few things have filled me with such a feeling of accomplishment as completing my first solo road trip, in Nova Scotia.
It’s never too late to try something new, whether it’s learning to drive, embarking on your first trip alone, or challenging yourself with a different style of travel or an unfamiliar destination. I hope you continue to surprise yourself through solo travel.
Where I'm Traveling
I will soon be taking a road trip to Killarney, Ontario. Located on the north shore of Georgian Bay, this is an area that has inspired artists for generations, most notably the Group of Seven. I am excited at the prospect of a long drive through the countryside, the opportunity to explore the landscape, and the chance to sit by the water to just enjoy the fresh air and peace and quiet. I may even do a digital detox!
Nominate Your Company for a Solo Travel Award
Nominations for the 2nd annual Solo Travel Awards are now being accepted. The Awards are designed to recognize companies that treat solo travelers well and encourage more to do the same. It's part of our commitment to advocate on behalf of solo travelers. Companies nominate themselves and share information on how they serve solo travelers well so that our panel of judges can determine the winners. The Awards are sponsored by World Nomads.
This year, we're excited to include a new Award in the program. The World Nomads Solo Travelers Choice Award will open for voting after nominations for the general awards close on May 15th. From May 16th to September 15th you will be able to review all the nominees and vote for the company that you think serves solo travelers exceptionally well. At the same time, you'll be introduced to new companies to consider in your travel plans.
Happy travels,
Tracey
